Niloy Kumar Som

Hi,

I am Niloy Kumar Som. A graduate from College of Arts, New Delhi (2004 batch, in-case you want to check :)). It's been quite some time now that I have been working in advertising. 12 years to be precise. So it is safe to say I understand the tricks and trades of the business.

Form "logo bada kardo" to "isme maza nahi aa raha, kuch aur karte hai", I have heard it all. But come what may, I still love this profession and enjoy it everyday. After all from making diagrams in my fellow classmates practical files to making films for big time clients, I have been lucky to follow my passion for creativity.

In my initial years, I have fortunately worked with Webchutney, from where I have been to Bates141, Publicis, JWT, Dentsu and now currently working with Hakuhodo. All the agencies have been good to me, and the learning has been immensely productive I must say. And in them I have worked for big clients like HBO, Microsoft, Mountain Dew, Tropicana, Nestle Maggi, Sony, Maruti and many more. With such clients I have seen days that were fun and not so much fun.

Though from an art background, I love to write ad films. Make me do that all day. I will do it. That's the reason why I have a few in my folio. Apart from that I love ideation. Not just to sit idle, if you are thinking so. This makes me the guy you should not ask "yeh font kaunsa hai?", coz to me if you did not like an idea, the spectacularly awesome font just does not matter. Baki sab... bindas pucho!

Well that's me in short. Enjoy the folio!

Films

My love for writing ad films has got me some to showcase in my folio. Honestly, not all of them has been handled by me all by myself. Since I had a great team, everyone had something or the other to add to these creatives. But all of them had me in common for ideation and conceptualization.

PhiveRivers
Starting-off the films division with my latest work. Conceptualised by myself, this film was shot by a really good director named Atul Kattukaran. I was significantly involved in all the stages of this film, from ideating to shooting, to editing and also music- supervising and guest supervising. But all that said, I had a great support and involvement from my BOSS himself.

Sony Handycam
The very first film I was involved in. Handycam was a first family product, for people who have just had kids. And its easy for them to miss and then regret missing the first moments of their little ones. To them was dedicated these series of films. My contribution was till the ideation and script writing. Rest done by the BOSS!

LINE Voice Chat and Stickers
LINE the messenger service. This name is remembered in all of Hakuhodo for the flurry of films it brought into the agency. All of them, beautifully crafted. All of them from my team. The first 2 were the best. Coming out of my copywriters brilliant mind, and with a bit of help from me as well, these films got a lot of recognition amongst it's audience. The fun part was the shooting of these films, though this was not my first film shoot.

LINE Free Voice Call
Free voice calls, ok almost free voice calls. Our second successful attempt to build the brands imagery amongst the youth. The first one was out of my little head, the second one from my writer again (so honest I am). But we all enjoyed making them of-course.

LINE Voice Call & Stickers (KATRINA)
Attempt 3. And this time a big one. With Katrina Kaif.
Again promoting voice chats and stickers over Diwali, these 2 ads got us pretty good numbers. Though Whatsapp had started beating us again.
Though not my first celebrity experience, this project gave me, my biggest learning on how to handle celebrity (or celebrity agents I should say), specially when they start acting funny. Boy! that was some aggression and confidence I saw and learned from the BOSS! Hats off!

HeroCycles
All credit to me!
It was fun making the entire film all by myself, and the client appreciating the same by saying "this was the best commercial for Hero. Hero cycles is already a household name, but kids today have choices of better sports bikes. All showcasing the same stunts and agility, Hero cycles managed an emotional connect with this ad. See if it reminds you of your childhood.

CenturyLaminate
Clients first.. Our first. Laminates as a category is growing and so is the requirement to advertise the choices they provide. A campaign showcasing the wide varieties of laminates that India's leading laminates maker has. The best part was the music. Catchy, peppy and sticks to the mind. Hear it.

Mammy Poko Pants
Ok! Fine! The CG is good at least!

Folio Work

Released Work

Businessworld
The great Indian Business magazine, that has won people awards. I too got my chance to work on this brand, and did manage to get a decent campaign out on it, way back in my Bates days.
Here’s how it goes.

Sony Vaio Campaign
A laptop with good sound. Might not mean much to most, but to college kids, it is a good attraction. Young, vibrant and energetic, this campaign stayed on the shelfs for quite sometime and made Sony proud.

Sony Vaio Campaign
STYLE was the call… And style we gave, for the world to notice.
And… I got to shoot with Suresh Natrajan and Kareena Kapoor!

Design Stuff

Absolut Singularity
When people of vivid religions, cultures, beliefs and values come together in a celebration, it is difficult to tell them apart. The colors deliberately chosen from Tricolor represents this diversity of India and the splash of droplets coming together across the design is a metaphor to the ease and fluidity with which Indians mingle and celebrate with each other. This design is an ode to this Absolut Singularity that runs as an undercurrent in all Indians.

Rocket Science Animation
Animation studios with static stationaries? Seriously?! No no no no... it has to be animated. That's where comes the age old "Barrier Grid Animation technique". Bringing this technique into daily use, worked wonders with design. Though I wanted it to flow into all forms of stationaries, but money allowed me this only. :)
